HIAL Airport Lease Renewal

15th Feb 2019

Machrihanish Airbase Community Company (MACC) is delighted to announce the renewal of the lease of Campbeltown Airport to operator Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL). HIAL operates and manages 11 airports around Scotland and has been operating Campbeltown Airport since 1996. The new lease renews the commitment to continue operations until 2030, securing a lifeline link and jobs for the area.

Campbeltown Airport has a long and varied history, serving as both a military and commercial aerodrome. It was the location for the first scheduled commercial flight in Scotland which flew between Glasgow and Campbeltown in 1933.

In 2019 two daily commercial flights operate between Glasgow and Campbeltown Airport. Much of the original airbase has been developed as a business and industrial park.

MACC chairman Tom Millar said: “We are delighted that HIAL has extended its existing lease at Campbeltown Airport until 2030. The former RAF airbase has been converted into a thriving Business Park since MACC took over ownership in 2012. Having the airport is vital for attracting inward investment for new businesses and increasing tourism as well as continuing to serve the surrounding Campbeltown community.”

HIAL managing director Inglis Lyon, said, “It’s fantastic news for HIAL and for Campbeltown Airport that we have now secured the lease until 2030. Our continued commitment to the area will hopefully support the community and ongoing developments in this stunning part of the world.”
