Public Airbase Vote To Take Place 17 to 24 May
The bid to acquire Machrihanish Airbase for the community has reached a critical stage. This is a unique opportunity for the people of South Kintyre to secure an asset which will be an investment for the future and a means of bringing a wide range of benefits and opportunities to the community. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an enormous asset for the benefit of present and future generations. However, the support of the community of South Kintyre is a key element in the "Right to Buy" process.
If the community gives the go-ahead in a ballot of all electors in the "PA28 6" postal area, Machrihanish Airbase Community Company (MACC) would be able to consider a comprehensive business plan to decide if purchasing the airbase is a viable option. If the community says "no", all will be lost - the community would have no say in its future use and the right to buy would be extinguished. It's as simple as that.
The ballot must go ahead very soon in order to meet the strict timetable imposed under the "Right to Buy" law, and has been scheduled for the week beginning Monday 17 May. At least 50% of the electors in PA28 6 must vote in order for the ballot to be valid. Of those voting, at least 50% must be in favour of proceeding with the plan. The deadline for return of Ballot Papers is 24th May. The count will take place on 25th May in order for the official return to be made on the deadline which is 26th May.
Of course, there is much information to be provided and many questions to be answered, so MACC has arranged a Public Meeting in the Victoria Hall, Campbeltown at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th May.
